Interview with Raphaël Gentot, organizer of Génération Entreprendre
Nice-Première: What is the goal of this forum?
Raphaël Gentot: The objective is to gather in one place two populations. First, those who have a business creation project and then those composed of actors who advise, support, and provide financial aid to creators. The forum offers project holders a clearer view of the actors assisting in company creation. It contributes to democratizing creation. It teaches the 2000 visitors that one can start a business even if one is receiving minimum social benefits.
NP: How is business creation doing in the region?
RG: The PACA region is the second highest region in terms of business creation after Ile de France. Unfortunately, it is also one of the regions with the highest failure rate. The three-year mark is the most difficult to surpass.
NP: What are the steps to take before launching a business?
RG: It all depends on the status. It depends whether one is employed or unemployed and whether one is affiliated with the chamber of commerce or the chamber of crafts. The organizations accompany the project holders. The survival rate increases if advised by an expert. The institutions provide subsidies to finance these experts, which may be waived if one is unemployed.
NP: What are the jury’s criteria for awarding the “favorite” prizes?
RG: The favorite prize rewards a company created after January 1, 2005. The quality of the initiative and the energy used to achieve the set goals are the main criteria. This year, and here’s the novelty, a prize will also be awarded to a business acquirer.
NP: Is there a required age to start your own business?
RG: There isn’t really a required age: older individuals have more experience and younger ones have more energy. It is true that in recent years, startups created by young people often right after their studies are performing very well.
