The first half of 2020 was synonymous with constraints in all circumstances: health, social, economic, relational, professional, and event-related. To make people forget this bewildering period, Espace Magnan offers its audience a 2020/2021 film season dedicated entirely to Freedom.
Health crisis, wearing masks, new positive cases, these are the only words the public hears every day. There is certainly enough to be saturated with what television and social networks broadcast. As a result, social ties are threatened. For the cultural center Espace Magnan, this goes against its objectives. So, let’s focus on cinema.
A weekly cinema that incites reflection
To recreate social links, Espace Magnan, under the direction of Alexandre Vandekerkhove (33 years old), has been organizing cinema-focused events since last Tuesday. This project is implemented in compliance with health measures (a maximum of 100 people). For the 2020-2021 season, the theme of FREEDOM has been chosen.
Throughout its cinema Tuesdays, the organizers will prompt the present audience to reflect on various forms of freedom (voting, press, sexual freedom, abortion, expression, etc.)
A first film reflecting a promising start to the season
On the program are 11 films, 10 of which are classified as art and essay. Last Tuesday, for its first Cinema Tuesday, Alexandre Vandekerkhove and his colleague Marie-France decided to screen the Franco-Afghan feature film, Kabullywood, directed in 2016 by Louis Meunier.
In this film, the story is centered on four students. Residing in Kabul, Afghanistan, and thirsting for life, they together decide to undertake a very daring project: to renovate an abandoned cinema that has survived 30 years of war, a decision strongly opposed by the Afghan army general who turns out to be the father of one of the students.
A very good way to provoke reflection on the different forms of freedom. “We thought of this project last year. The goal is to create a weekly meeting to build a loyal cinema audience. Tonight, you have attended the first official session since these 6 months of lockdown,” analyzes the center’s director.
