Esports: Misfits crowned French champion of League of Legends

Latest News

Last week, the grand finale of the French league for the most renowned game in the esports scene, League of Legends, took place in Monaco. Before this major event, two show matches and a pre-show treated the fans to more than 6 hours of competition.

A First of Its Kind

With the ongoing global health crisis, the final was relocated to the Grimaldi Forum during the Sportel Awards. In previous years, the co-producers Riot Games (the gameโ€™s developer) and Webedia planned the event at the Paris Games Week. The national final was thus held in a unique and prestigious setting for the players. The President of the Monaco Esports Federation, Louis Ducruet, stated:

โ€œThe Monaco Esports Federation is proud to host the LFL finals on a day entirely dedicated to esports, where we will also see the TFT Monaco Invitational finals and a show match. It is one of the first esports events with international reach for the Principality, and we are eager to witness some excellent matches!โ€

Louis Ducruet, President of Monaco Esports Federation.

A Limited Audience

The organizers of the Prince Pierre Hall at the Grimaldi Forum adapted to comply with health regulations in force. Physical spectators were limited to 380 people instead of the usual 800.

Tense Matches

The TFT show match surprised the fans online on the Twitch platform on the ES1 channel. Indeed, the young rookie Zididi snatched victory from the 2020 world champion Double61. The tournament lived up to its expectations by being close from start to finish. Zididi starts his young career with a French championship title.

The highly anticipated grand finale of League of Legends saw Gamers Origin, winners of the first two phases in spring and summer (these phases divide the season), face off against Misfits Premier, the reigning runner-up of France. The latter had eliminated their opponent in the semi-finals of the 2019 edition. The competition’s strong favorites and early season winners were soundly defeated by Misfits with a decisive score of 3 to 0. The Gamers Origin team has reason to be disappointed as the defeat surprised all spectators. Misfits indeed played this final with a substitute and a last-minute position change. Thus, this historic match concludes the national season for the eight teams in the circuit. A small novelty for the next edition will be the addition of two new teams.
