Organized by the City of Nice and supported by the Bernar Venet Foundation, presided over by Jérôme Sans, curator and art critic, former director of the Palais de Tokyo (Paris), it awarded two young artists.
The first award was given to Eun Yeoung Lee, a 27-year-old Korean artist. Her work invites one to explore her mental space, to enter her makeshift huts made of cardboard and populated with ailing ceramic animals. Through drawings and installations, she wields a certain violence under a deceptively innocent guise.
The second laureate is Jean-Baptiste Engler, aged 25. For him, the urban space is a field of research and experimentation. He borrows materials from reality (urban furniture, bus shelter glass, etc.) which are then recycled, reworked, in such a way as to inhabit the present in its simultaneously brutal and fantastic dimensions.
The winners will each receive a creative grant of 1,500 euros, along with a residency and an exhibition at the Galerie de la Marine in October 2011.
This award is part of the 2010 annual graduate exhibition of the Ecole nationale supérieure d’art de la Villa Arson. It unfolds in two parts: at the Galerie de la Marine and starting on July 1st at 6 PM (opening) at Villa Arson. It fully participates in supporting these graduates and providing them with an initial form of recognition.
