For Europe, it is not a happy event, but it opens the door to a possible strengthening of its aspirations as a global leader.
Provided they prove they have the courage, the (for now) Twenty-Eight can become number one in the battle to save the planet, as well as in protecting free and fair trade exchanges.
It’s a responsibility that hints at opportunities. Washington’s “no” to the Paris agreements was anticipated in Brussels and Berlin, which plan to deepen relations with the Chinese, the self-proclaimed new heroes of globalization and ‘green’ defense, as if they were the Americans.
A fascinating situation is emerging with Beijing. Beautiful and dangerous.
Europe has the opportunity to set a good example and dictate the rules on climate, hoping “The Donald” changes his mind. The game attracts everyone, starting with “Frau Merkel” and her young French accomplice, Emmanuel Macron.
For it involves convincing the Asians to pollute less and, pragmatically, consolidating trade relations that can potentially earn billions for those who can achieve this (Germans in particular).
For this, Europe must be united and Angela Merkel’s leadership must not become a national German issue but take on the characteristics of a true European Union.
