The European Parliament concluded the last session of its seventh term with 70 legislative projects adopted. Over the past five years, the Parliament has adopted 970 legislative acts. The eighth Parliament will be formed on July 1st, after the elections which will take place from May 22nd to 25th.
On May 15th, a “presidential” debate with the five main candidates for the presidency of the European Commission will take place in the Parliament’s chamber in Brussels and will be organized by the European Broadcasting Union (Eurovision).
Jean-Claude Juncker for the European People’s Party, Martin Schulz for the Party of European Socialists, Guy Verhofstadt for the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, Ska Keller for the Green Party, and Alexis Tsipras for the Party of the European Left will participate in the debate.
The “electoral” night will take place on May 25th.
On May 27th, the current Conference of Presidents (composed of the President of the Parliament and the leaders of the political groups) will meet to make a preliminary assessment of the election results.
The President of the Parliament, Martin Schulz, will inform the President of the Council, Herman Van Rompuy, of the Conference’s conclusions.
The European Council – that is, the Heads of State and Government of the EU – will meet later that day.
The newly elected Members of Parliament will meet during the month of June to form new political groups. Any notification of the formation of a group must be submitted to the President of the Parliament by June 24th.
