This Monday, the first official meeting of the “Desire for an Ecological and Social Europe” list, led nationally by Raphaรซl Glucksman and represented for this Nice event by MEP Sylvie Guillaume, was held at the Aston hotel.
The room was quite full when Xavier Garcia (departmental secretary of the PS) opened the debate. Now that the list is supported by the PRG, I naturally took the floor to explain this agreement. In fact, I outlined five major reasons: “Desire for Europe” is a European list (there are very few among the dozens of lists presented), a social list (for a rebalancing against the very liberal ideology that dominates in Europe and France), a secular list (against communitarianism), a renewal list (with Place Publique and Nouvelle Donne), and a list that claims its belonging to the government left (the best remedy against populism).
But, of course, it was the evening’s special guest who energized the debate by passionately, yet candidly, giving a sort of report of her mandate (at the end of which one gets the feeling that a European deputy actually has greater leeway than a national parliamentarian).
She then explained that the debate between liberals and populists that has been sold to us since the beginning of the French campaign is purely national, since at the level of the Strasbourg parliament everything will once again play out between conservatives and social democrats. Therefore, on May 26, it will be crucial not to choose the wrong battle.
