The prefecture has released the lists of candidates for the SOUTHEAST constituency (which includes the Alpes-Maritimes department, hence Nice and its metropolis) for the European elections on May 25. There are 23 of them, no less!
For a country that increasingly considers itself “eurosceptic,” there is no shortage of aspirations, and one wonders if this enthusiasm stems from a newfound faith in community institutions or if the candidates secretly hope for electoral success for sustenance or perhaps ambition for a quarter-hour of fame and the narcissistic pleasure of a little notoriety, even if fleeting.
In traditional parties, we note the presence of nationally renowned front-runners, such as the Marseillais Renaud Muselier (UMP), who had withdrawn from politics after some electoral setbacks, now returning at the first good opportunity; the tireless Jean-Marie Le Pen who will be accompanied by the elected Nice official Marie-Christine Arnautu in the number 2 position; the outgoing and possibly returning Michèle Rivasi (EE), Corsican François Alfonsi, and Marie-Christine Vergiat (FdG) and, to conclude, Vincent Peillon, whose name will always be associated with the law on school rhythms which has, from its inception to its aftermath, become the philosopher’s stone of French life!
We dare not imagine what voters will make of this political babble of offers during a two-week propaganda campaign starting May 12.
All this will most likely end in a record abstention, a minority of voters imposing their will, and, as a result, candidates ending up in the hemicycle by default or, worse, by chance…
Of course, starting Monday, May 26, we will all start blaming it on Europe again!
