European Union, the 10 Challenges of the Year 2021: Renewing the Transatlantic Relationship (8)

Latest News

Another crucial topic for Europe’s commercial future is the attitude of the new Biden administration in Washington. A long period of transatlantic trade war, during which Donald Trump had imposed new tariffs on a series of European products, had revived the debate on “European strategic autonomy.”

After this new election, the goal is to restore a more cooperative relationship with the United States.

Another key topic in the new transatlantic relations is the digital giants. As a significant number of them are American, Brussels will have to reach an agreement with Washington on the implementation of the recent legislative package (Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act) proposed by the European Commission. Additionally, there is the desire to establish a global tax (or, if necessary, a European one) on tech giants.

Lastly, Brussels aims to cooperate more closely with Washington on other issues, particularly on climate matters, following Joe Biden’s announcement of his intention to reintegrate the United States into the Paris Agreement.
