Fifteen days ago, it was raining during the protest of medical students who were demonstrating against the reform of the first year of their curriculum, which includes a “numerus clausus” to advance to the second year.* Yesterday, it was raining again… Should this gloom be seen as an omen?
Supported by a few parents, the few dozen protesters aimed to put pressure on the University to increase the available spots.
Since the students repeating the year from the previous one are still present and are set to claim more than half of the spots (110 out of the 200 available), the “first-time” students will only be entitled to 90 spots.
The issue is delicate because, regardless of the specialty chosen, whether general medicine, midwifery, or physiotherapy, a first year of medical studies is necessary. And the limited number of spots will result in many students having to switch to other fields.
A petition was launched at the beginning of the year. So far, it has gathered over 1,700 signatures. Not exactly the “voice of the people”… rather a soft murmur!
