Excluded from the European Cup, AS Monaco Basket files an application in National 1

The morning was once again eventful for Monaco Basket. After several unsuccessful appeals to remain in the elite of French basketball, the Roca Team was excluded from the European Cup. A decision that forces the Rock’s club to start from the bottom, namely National 1.

The saga around the Roca Team is still not finished being written. Over with the battle with the authorities to try to remain in the elite of French basketball, the Roca Team finally decided to file an application to compete in National 1 (third division).

In a statement published this Tuesday on its website, the Rock’s club announces : « file its application for participation in the French National Men’s 1 Championship (NM1). The objective is clear: to return. Return through sport and on the field. To climb, with determination and humility, each of the stages that separate us from the highest level. »

It was following its exclusion from the Eurocup, announced this morning, that Monaco made this decision to attempt the NM1 adventure. Those who wanted to join the Adriatic League to keep hope of participating in a European Cup saw their plan overturned with this announcement of European Cup ban.

No more interest therefore in attempting the Adriatic League adventure. No more hope either of being in Betclic Elite or Betclic Elite 2. Monaco is therefore forced to rebuild lower down, far from the great basketball nights that made its reputation in France and Europe.

What to expect on the sporting front in case of participation in NM1 ?

If the Roca Team’s application is validated by the FFBB, that won’t settle everything. On the field, many gray areas remain, starting with the constitution of a viable squad according to the economic constraints of N1.

While all the club’s stars have left one by one, it is hard to imagine the only survivor under contract from last season, Juhann Begarin, remaining at the club in N1.

If Monaco is accepted in National 1, their adventure would begin on September 18 at home against Berck. This would leave only two weeks for the Rock’s club to find stability both behind the scenes and on the field.
