Exhibition at Villa Arson: The Time of Listening

Latest News

Exhibition to see until October 30, 2011, at the Gallery of the patio and cypresses. Sound and musical practices on the French Riviera from the 1950s to today.

villa_arson_nice-4.jpg The exhibition “Le temps de l’écoute” aims to trace sixty years of sound and musical creation on the French Riviera. This history is built through the perspective of contemporary artists working or having worked in the region who were asked to produce a work intended to resonate with past productions.

Each artist takes charge of one or more sequences of this history, associating them with their own practice, thus creating original works that incorporate experiences from the past.

The dialogues are as follows: Pascal Broccolichi & Lars Fredrikson, Vincent Epplay & Robert Malaval & The Rolling Stones, Jérôme Joy & Jean Dupuy, Ludovic Lignon & Lars Fredrikson, Arnaud Maguet & Sun Ra, Arnaud Maguet & Soft Machine & Jean-Jacques Lebel, Arnaud Maguet & Richard Prompt, Isabelle Sordage & Éléonore Bak, Isabelle Sordage & Éliane Radigue, Gauthier Tassart & Thomas Köner, Gauthier Tassart & Jean-Pierre Massiéra, Christian Vialard & Yves Klein.

This choice is explained by the curators’ desire not to produce a historian’s exhibition or to limit the project to presenting archives, documents, or simply reactivated installations. It is also understood as a formal and theoretical method for analyzing the particularly experimental field of sound and musical practices. Finally, it is about relying on the creativity of contemporary artists to create the link between the past and their own experiences.

The conception and realization of the publication is entrusted to The Bells Angels (Simon Bernheim and Julien Sirjacq) who are undertaking a residency at the Villa Arson for the occasion, thanks to the support of the General Council of the Alpes-Maritimes. A large part of the documents collected for this publication is integrated into the exhibition, thus contributing to its scenography and mediation.

The Bells Angels also create a sound piece from the exhibition for the Ateliers de Création Radiophonique of France Culture (broadcast scheduled for October 2011).

Unprecedented presentation of the Collective JukeBox, a project by Jérôme Joy.
Curation: Jean-Marc Avrilla and Éric Mangion
