Amidst global political upheavals, I must admit that I struggle to write about these events. Sometimes I lack the necessary perspective and a good understanding of the facts. The democratic prospects or global balance at stake are both wonderful and frightening.
There is one thing I am certain of: erecting barricades around our properties, our European borders, and our comfort will achieve nothing. Quoting Renรฉ Lenoir, “Build very high barriers, the poor will always find a way to slip under them…”
The populist, demagogic, protectionist fever and the liberated racist rhetoric that invades our airwaves and everyday encounters give me chills. As the local elections approach, there are few debates and projects. A former president seems to avoid answering to justice. The tax reform in preparation is likely to affect the middle class more than it will touch the greatest and most insolent of riches. Energy prices are soaring, without any intervention from our leaders. I thought we could play on the TIPP for fuels and that solar was a solution… Local authorities surround themselves with luxury and comfort, transporting cars and personal chauffeurs during their Parisian travels!
Fortunately, many among us are still trying to correct our democracy, relaying some reflections on the day-to-day workings that quietly enhance the quality of social links here, or support the democratic fight elsewhere. Many remember that the management of a few cities by the National Front (Toulon, Marignane…) brought only false solutions and disappointments. Not without having sorted out some “non-conforming” books in municipal libraries… and chased away cultural festivals!
That is why, with a thought for those who suffer from isolation, poverty, by illness, here, and a brief mention of those women over there, who, bare before Ivorian soldiers, have just sacrificed their lives, I address you by expressing my hope.
This hope lies in action, information, dialogue, openness to others. Not in retreat into identity, racism, individualism.
And after all these reflections and shared analyses… To the polls, everyone!!!
