(Statement from the municipal council group “A Different Future for Nice”)
We have learned that, contrary to Christian Estrosi’s statements, the city of Nice never received approval from the CNIL to experiment with facial recognition software during the Nice Carnival, simply because it is not (or no longer) authorized to approve such a system.
This lie is all the more incomprehensible as the mayor only notified the CNIL of his intent to experiment with the system on February 1, 2019, for the dates of February 16, 19, and 20, which did not make it easier for the commission to do its work.
Consequently, we, the elected officials of the group “A Different Future for Nice”, demand that this experiment be stopped immediately. Furthermore, we are pleased that four associations have taken legal action at the administrative court against the Regional Council’s decision allowing the experimentation of facial recognition in certain high schools in the region, including the Eucalyptus high school in Nice.
