When you go shopping, do you spend time in the fair trade products section? According to the study “The French and Fair Trade,” published by TNS Sofres in October 2010, fair trade is still less known than organic products (56% versus 76% for organic products).
In detail, this study reveals a lack of information and clarity in the communication about fair trade, both for the French in general and, more surprisingly, by regular buyers of fair trade products: 51% of them have a fuzzy understanding of the guarantees provided by labels, 56% of the workings of the sector, and even 70% of the distinction between labels and 72% of the portion of the price paid that goes back to the producer.
To navigate this, the best solution is to engage with local and/or international actors of this type of commerce. But how?
