Led by Geneviรจve Legay, co-president of the Artisans du Monde Nice association, Shampa Bakshi, marketing manager of the SILENCE company, and Pradip Ray, Art Professor of the SILENCE company, a conference on fair trade in India will be held on Friday, May 25, 2012, at 6:30 PM at the Maison de lโEnvironnement of the City of Nice.
The situation of disabled people in India is very precarious. They are generally excluded from society and isolated. Founded in 1979 in the Kolkata region, the SILENCE company provides them with training and employment in crafts and data entry. 85% of the sales of manufactured products are made in the fair trade market, with 65% being exported (mainly to the European Union). Among other things, the artisans produce greeting cards, candles, fashion jewelry, incense sticks, and tea strainers.
On the occasion of the Fair Trade Fortnight 2012, two representatives from the SILENCE company are touring the Artisans du Monde associations in the Provence Alpes Cรดte dโAzur region to meet volunteers and the general public: a way for them to introduce their work and show how fair trade benefits them in their daily lives.
Artisans du Monde has been present in the Alpes Maritimes department since 1997, with its store located at 13 rue Amiral de Grasse in Nice. The association promotes fair trade by working on three complementary axes: the sale of fair trade products, raising awareness and educating about fair trade and sustainable development, and finally, supporting national campaigns and advocacy.
