Stickers containing fake QR codes have been discovered on 161 devices throughout the city. These stickers are affixed near messages recommending the payment application “PayByPhone.”
A new parking meter scam has been uncovered in Nice. It aims to deceive users by stealing sensitive personal information, including their banking data.
An initial warning was issued last July, and a complaint had already been filed at that time. The municipal services reacted quickly by immediately removing the fraudulent stickers and reiterating their warning to users.
The fake QR codes direct potential victims to malicious sites that mimic the PayByPhone application. Users who think they are accessing a legitimate service may inadvertently transmit their personal information to cybercriminals. This technique, called “phishing,” is increasingly used in public spaces to trap citizens.
Report abuse and remain vigilant
In a statement, the city of Nice reminded users to be particularly vigilant. It is crucial to download the PayByPhone application exclusively from official platforms, such as the Apple Store and Google Play, to avoid any risk. Official platforms are the only ones that guarantee the authenticity and security of parking payment transactions.
The municipality encourages citizens to immediately report any discovery of a suspicious QR code on a parking meter. Users can contact the City of Nice’s paid parking service at 04 89 98 29 41 for any information or reporting.
