On the occasion of the traditional feast of the Assumption, the Virgin Mary, patroness of sailors, will be celebrated in the presence of many faithful.
The object of particular devotion, Mary is a popular figure in the Catholic Church, dear to Mediterranean peoples.
The Madonna indeed symbolizes the image of the Mother, protector, and comforter.
She is the subject of many artistic and votive representations.
On the occasion of the feast of the Assumption, the Club de la Mouette will assemble about forty ‘pointus’ (traditional fishing boats) which will proceed to a maritime procession of the statue of the Virgin in the Lympia port of Nice.
These ‘pointus’ have an average age of 56 years.
Knowing that no more are made today, it is a heritage to appreciate, protect, and which will be blessed on this day of Saint Mary.
Procession schedule:
5:45 PM: Parade of the flower-adorned ‘pointus’ from the Mouette in the Lympia and Admirals basins, with musical entertainment,
6:15 PM: Blessing of the ‘pointus’,
6:30 PM: Procession of the statue of the Virgin, from the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception to the Customs Quay,
7:00 PM: Outdoor mass on the Customs Quay,
8:15 PM: Addresses,
8:30 PM: Return of the procession to bring back the statue of the Virgin,
10:00 PM: Grand fireworks display in front of the Tourist Office and Convention Center (O.T.C.), organized as part of the Prom’ Party which will take place from 8:00 PM to 11:30 PM.
