After the 11th edition of “Sentez-vous Sport” which took place from September 21 to 26,
the CROS Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur will take up its… pilgrim’s staff at the beginning of October to continue organizing meetings between healthcare professionals and sports movement actors. The goal is to raise public awareness of sports on medical prescription while strengthening communication with health and sports movement stakeholders in the region.
“Sentez-Vous Sport” is a national operation to promote sports for all, organized and labeled by the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF). It aims to demonstrate to all audiences the effects of sports as a factor of health, well-being, and pleasure, and encourages the resumption of physical activity to combat sedentary behavior and inactivity.
Proven effectiveness, but a device to be developed
While the benefits of physical activity on health no longer need demonstrating, the development of sports on prescription, which came into effect in March 2017, still faces many obstacles despite the fact that 30% of the population is concerned. Nearly 20 million French people suffer from a chronic disease (cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative diseases, asthma, etc.) or a long-term condition (LTC) that would justify the prescription of an adapted physical activity (APA).
In 2028, in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, nearly 2 million people could be supported for chronic diseases.
Despite the widely proven medical interest, the use of this non-drug therapy is not sufficiently taught in medical curricula. Very often, healthcare professionals do not know the sports health professions, the adapted physical activity programs, and the required qualifications. They are also unaware of the available resources in their territory.
One of the main tools was launched at the national level at the end of 2018, designed by the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) in partnership with Vidal editions: Médico-Sport-Santé, a “dictionary” that lists the characteristics of each discipline, the potential benefits and health impacts on the practitioner from a physical, physiological, and mental standpoint, as well as the
practice conditions within the sport-health framework. Available on the CNOSF and Vidal websites, it currently contains the sport-health protocol of 45 federations. More than 20% of prescriptions are encouraged by the patients themselves.
This is why the CROS, after traveling in 2018 and 2019 with the CREPS (Resource, Expertise and Sports Performance Center) through the six departments of the region to meet healthcare professionals and sports associations to boost the many initiatives undertaken in favor of patient reception, decided to promote the device on the patient side, precisely, to accelerate its
implementation: “The idea is for the patient to become a prescriber and even an actor
in their pathology by going to see their general practitioner,” insists Christian
Guibert, Vice-President of the CROS, responsible for the Sports-Health commission.
Many initiatives have been implemented over the past three years to support people wishing to resume an adapted physical activity or simply to start it, notably the creation of Sport-Health Houses; 138 projects were labeled in January 2020, of which 11 are in Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, among which eight are managed by the sports movement. The government aims to label
500 more across the national territory in 2022.
Regardless of their age or health status, members find trained professionals there, able to offer them tailored support, individually or in small groups.
Given the current health context and the imposed restrictions, the cdos06 has implemented actions, including 2 live sessions on the Facebook page @cdos06.
- Sunday, September 27 at 10:30 am: Live video broadcast of 45 minutes on the CDOS06 Facebook page: “Muscle Wake-up and Fitness” with Tyne Manassero, who organized every morning during the confinement 55 live physical activity sessions called “Gym for Neighbors” for the general public without age limitation.
- Tuesday, September 29 with several broadcasts throughout the day on the CDOS06 Facebook page: “World Heart Day”: Information to the general public who might one day witness a cardiac arrest in cooperation with the SDIS06 firefighters and the UDSP06 (Union of Departmental Firefighters). Note the exceptional participation of Alain BERNARD, Olympic swimming champion, deeply involved in the awareness of sports health and the transmission of “Life-saving actions”.
