Film debate on a complex and current topic: homoparenting

The Association for Democracy in Nice (ADN) โ€“ in partnership with the Polychromes association as part of the “An Indian Summer” festival โ€“ presented in a preview: “The Kids Are All Right” by Lisa Cholodenko (Berlin Festival 2010).

This screening was followed by a debate co-hosted by the APGL associations (Association of Gay and Lesbian Parents) and ADN. Numerous interventions and issues characterized the evening with the never-ending debate of ideas on a truly controversial theme.

In this case, one could say that cinema, with this film, lives with its time.

As for the reality of the situation: 50,000 children were born in France through donor sperm insemination (IAD), and a draft revision of bioethics laws was unveiled. It provides the possibility for children born from a gamete donation to have access, as soon as they reach adulthood, to the identity of the donor, provided that the donor consents. If the donor refuses, the requester can always obtain the medical, socio-professional, and geographic data of their biological father.

If this draft is voted on, this evolution could herald the next step: expanding medically assisted procreation (currently reserved for heterosexual couples) to gay couples, who are now thankfully viewed differently.

It is precisely with this spirit that Lisa Cholodenko (herself a homosexual mother of a child conceived through artificial insemination whom she raises with her partner) wanted to make this film that tackles a theme that has captivated everyone since the dawn of time.

THE FILM:

The Kids Are All Right chronicles two homosexual mothers who have lived together for 20 years and see their family life turned upside down when their children decide to find the donor they both came from…

In the official selection of the Sundance 2010 and Deauville 2010 festivals, this comedy with Julianne Moore and Annette Bening was also awarded a Teddy Award at the Berlin Festival.
