The Heritage Foundation is organizing a series of conferences in 2019 on important projects it supports. The preservation of both large-scale and small-scale heritage has been a commitment of the Foundation for 20 years, in the Alpes-Maritimes and throughout France.
The first conference: “Restoring the Monastic Tower of the Abbey of Lérins, a remarkable site” will take place this Tuesday at 4 PM at the CUM.
Speakers:
Yann Coudou, a medievalist and assistant professor at the University of Nice, will present the history of this monastic tower rising by the Mediterranean Sea.
Dom Valdimir Gaudrat, Abbot of Lérins, will present the current life of the Abbey at the heart of one of the most beautiful sites in the Alpes-Maritimes.
With the participation of Jean-Louis Marquès, delegate of the Alpes-Maritimes for the Heritage Foundation, and Michèle Cianea, former director of the Historical Heritage Service of the City of Nice.
On Saint-Honorat Island, a magnificent listed and preserved site off the coast of the Bay of Cannes, stands a monumental ensemble composed of an 11th-century monastic tower, a 19th-century abbey, and seven chapels located around the island.
The Heritage Foundation and the monks of the Abbey have launched a fundraising campaign to restore the monastic tower and the Saint-Sauveur Chapel, two historically significant sites that must be preserved.
The restoration work will begin in 2019, providing an opportunity to revisit the extraordinary history of this monument together.
