The suspense is over. After several months of campaigning and a very intense run-off, François Hollande has finally been elected as the 24th President of the French Republic.
François Hollande becomes the 24th President of the French Republic by securing 51.62% compared to 48.38% for Sarkozy. In Paris, the UMP supporters’ gathering that was supposed to take place at the Place de la Concorde was canceled a little before 6 PM. Conversely, Rue de Solférino, where the PS headquarters is located, and Place de la Bastille were taken by storm by the Socialist supporters.
Nice and the Alpes-Maritimes Against the Tide
It is here in the Alpes-Maritimes that Nicolas Sarkozy achieved his best national score with 64.20% against 35.80% for Hollande. Out of 121 municipalities in the department, François Hollande came out on top in only 16.

- In Vence: Sarkozy 65.23%, Hollande 34.77%
- In Cannes Nicolas Sarkozy won 68.80% of the votes, François Hollande 31.20%
