The Massacre of Aigues-Mortes (Camargue) in 1893, which claimed the lives of about ten Italian immigrant workers and injured around a hundred peopleโall innocent victims of insane xenophobiaโhas been forgotten, even though it was the largest pogrom in contemporary French history and brought the two countries to the brink of war.
In more recent times, certain studies have reconstructed the events and examined the causes and consequences of this tragedy.
From these studies emerged the idea of an event in which Italian and French historians, including Gรฉrard Noiriel, the most important French historian of immigration, the descendants of the deceased, the mayors of Aigues-Mortes, and municipalities in Italy from where the victims of the massacre emigrated in search of a better life, will participate.
