“The sporting event: crossed perspectives on a strategic approach” was the subject of the conference that took place yesterday at the Francophonie Games village.
Yesterday, five qualified individuals presented to hold a conference on the sporting event. Christian Duval, University Professor and Director at Sciences Po Aix, Jacques Spindler, University Professor and Director of the IAE Nice, Manuela Bardet, Lecture Master UNSA, Pierre Dantin, University Professor, and David Huron, Lecture Master UNSA, were to speak one after the other on matters relating to the sporting event in front of an attentive audience.
“The sporting moment is a moment of sharing”
Manuela Bardet was the first to speak on the governance of sporting events. For her, this governance relies on a few aspects: identification of stakeholders, definition of their position and importance, and the contribution to give them. According to her, it is necessary to “Succeed in anticipating the event, rationalizing it.” Without forgetting that sport remains a moment of sharing.
David Huron was to address “the sporting event brand.” First of all, for him, we live in a society of “consovision”, meaning wherever you look, there are brand elements. “Everything is brand in our society.” A brand is reflected as capital. Finally, he concluded his argument by saying: “Having an event to organize is about managing an organization, doing marketing, tourism, but if you don’t manage in the long term, it’s a failure.”
Jacques Spindler prefers the term “event” to “event” because “the event must be exceptional.” “The evaluation of the event should not be measured by return on investment.” To explain this, he used the Nice example with “Nice 2018,” which allowed the city to gain recognition for other reasons. For him, the sporting evaluation is based on fiscal and financial analyses, cost and benefits, and economic impact.
Finally, Christian Duval and Pierre Dantin spoke to the audience. For the former, sport is clearly a societal phenomenon, a social object, and much more. He also insisted on differentiating values and qualities such as, for example, team spirit is said to be a value when it is actually a quality. For the latter, the event is a reason to do together. “Sport is the reflection of society. Sport is a need founded on values.”
Despite some differences in opinion, the speakers all agreed on the values of sport.
