Of the 80 journalists killed since the beginning of the year, 49 were “assassinated and deliberately targeted,” highlights the 2018 RSF report.
As of December 1st, 348 journalists are detained and 60 others are held hostage around the world…
While the media should be open to criticism, hatred has no place.
At the end of this year, RSF (Reporters Without Borders), an NGO formerly led by Robert Ménard, the mayor of Béziers, publishes its annual report on journalists killed, detained, held hostage, or missing.
Here is what the NGO reports: “While 2017 was a less deadly year for journalists compared to previous years, 2018 reverses this trend, with 80 journalists (including professionals, non-professionals, and media collaborators) killed worldwide. Among them, 63 professional journalists were killed in 2018 compared to 55 last year, an increase of 15%. The number of non-professional journalists has also increased, with 13 deaths compared to 7 last year. The latter play a fundamental role in the production of information, particularly under repressive regimes or in war-torn countries, where it is more difficult for professional journalists to do their jobs. In addition to these particularly alarming figures, more than a dozen cases are under investigation by Reporters Without Borders.”
