This Friday, June 21, a gathering against anti-Semitism took place in front of City Hall. From 4 p.m., speeches were given to emphasize the importance of solidarity and vigilance against this scourge. It was also reminded that this fight is a struggle for republican values.

Following the rape of a 12-year-old Jewish girl in Courbevoie, Christian Estrosi called for a “great republican gathering”. Thus, this Friday, June 21, around 4 p.m., over 1,000 people gathered in front of the City Hall of Nice. Some holding the tricolor flag, all were united for the same cause: fighting against anti-Semitism.

Our lives are worth more than the importation of the conflict

During this gathering, the Mayor of Nice and several elected officials also present gave speeches, testifying to their solidarity and strength. The event was organized in response to a wave of anti-Semitic acts and especially to the act committed on June 15.

Among the gathered people, some have French flags in their hands with inscriptions on them: “Stand up against anti-Semitism“, “Jewish girl raped, republic in danger” or “Our lives are worth more than the importation of the conflict“. These banners are held above their heads, allowing everyone to see them. Others have their fists raised, a sign of solidarity.

Some people just have their phones to film the event. Among the thousands of people, everyone seems to know each other, meeting up on site or coming together for the same reason: to show their support for this cause and the speeches made.

Associations, political leaders, and engaged citizens

Among the speeches was that of the president of CRIF Southeast, Jérôme Culioli, who also called for a gathering this Sunday, June 23 in front of the Palace of Justice for the release of the hostages. Once again, the recent events were mentioned.

Christian Estrosi also gave a speech: “Anti-Semitism is a poison. It always starts with words and it always ends with crime. And against anti-Semitism, we have the antidote, which is republican fraternity, it is secularism, and it is urgent that we reaffirm and defend this model. Because it is the only one that allows everyone, regardless of their origin, religion, or personal history, to live side by side rather than face to face,” he expressed.

In the crowd, located in front of the stage at the City Hall, people shout “Bravo” and all applaud. In front of the City Hall, the speakers all emphasized anti-Semitism, not as a past problem, but as a threat that remains real and persistent.
