The Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, announced this Wednesday on Cnews the closure of a mosque in Cannes due to, among other things, “anti-Semitic remarks.”
Indeed, an administrative closure procedure for the downtown Cannes mosque has been initiated. It concerns the Al Madina Al Mounawara Mosque located on Avenue du Petit Juas, opened on private land.
“We are closing one of the mosques in Cannes because we accuse it of anti-Semitic remarks, support for the CCIF (Collective against Islamophobia in France) and BarakaCity,” stated the Minister of the Interior.
Gérald Darmanin also specified that he had spoken with David Lisnard, the mayor of Cannes, and that the latter “bravely” supports this decision.
According to the town hall, this place might have become “a site of radicalization” with “the positions of the former rector.”
“We know that the vast majority of Muslims who attend this very old mosque do not share its deviation; some had even alerted us. It is therefore up to them to bring forth new leaders who respect the French Republic and the country so that the place of worship can then reopen, as discussed with the Minister of the Interior,” the municipality wrote in a statement.
