On July 4th, the anniversary of the birth of a unique person from Nice was celebrated.

First and foremost from Nice, Giuseppe Garibaldi was born in the city on July 4, 1807. His history and life are closely tied to Nice. He was baptized on July 19, 1807, in the Church of Saint-Martin-Saint-Augustin, in the Old Nice district.

A general, politician, and figure of Italian patriotism, he was a fervent defender of the freedom of peoples.

Two days after his passing, on June 4, 1882, the City of Nice, through its municipal council, decided to erect a monument in his honor. It wasnโ€™t until 1885 that the location for his statue was chosen, before being inaugurated in 1891.

The majestic work was designed by sculptors Antoine ร‰tex and Gustave Deloye. Garibaldi symbolically looks in the direction of Turin. This Turin-style square, built from 1773, the oldest in the city, is still one of the most frequented places in the city today.
