As part of the awareness campaign “Tackling Cancer Head On” organized by the European Head and Neck Society, under the auspices of Professors Lefebvre and Leemans, the Nice University Institute of the Face and Neck (IUFC) is holding an open conference to inform about the warning signs and risk factors of head and neck cancers.
The sixth most common cancer worldwide, upper aerodigestive tract cancers affect over 132,000 people in Europe. The result? About 62,000 deaths. This high incidence is also seen in France with more than 15,000 new cases per year. Adding to the problem? The lack of patient information about these sometimes lesser-known cancers.
What is UADT?
UADT cancers affect multiple areas, within the mouth (notably the tongue) and the throat (pharynx, larynx). Diagnosed at an advanced stage due to lack of prevention, they are very often fatal. To address this and inform the general public, Dr. Alexandre Bozec, co-leader with Dr. Olivier Dassonville of the “UADT and Salivary Gland Oncology” department at IUFC, is organizing a conference at the Antoine Lacassagne Center. The goal? To make the major risk factors of these cancers known to as many people as possible to prevent, identify, and quickly manage patients. Expected result, an improvement in patient survival, which today is estimated at 50% at 5 years, thanks to earlier consultation.
