Activists from the international movement Greenpeace will gather late in the morning at Place Masséna to denounce the influence of the Total group on society.
From 11:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., activists from the local Greenpeace group in Nice will meet with residents to raise awareness about Total’s influence strategy and its implications in the fight against climate change. The public will have the opportunity, through a quiz-based activity, to discover “where Total is hiding” among around thirty well-known French institutions.
The aim of this action is to denounce the stronghold the French oil giant has on a number of events such as educational projects, sporting events, and festivals… “By doing this, Total is trying to portray itself as a philanthropist, observes Edina Ifticène, Oil Campaign Manager at Greenpeace France, but when you dig a little deeper, you realize that all these partnerships are mainly either to enhance its image or to serve its private interests. This is what we call soft power.”
Greenpeace is no stranger to its battle against Total, as in addition to numerous past campaigns, the NGO has produced a four-episode documentary series titled “L’emprise Total”, in which it explores the multinational’s presence within major schools and cultural institutions.
