Due to the success of the guided tours of the Fort of Mont Alban, which saw a large influx of visitors this summer and during the recent European Heritage Days, the City of Nice has decided to extend access to this building, a witness to the military architecture of the County of Nice, next weekend, September 24th and 25th, and on October 1st and 2nd, 2011.
To discover or rediscover this rich gem of our heritage, classified as a Historical Monument in 1909, please contact the Heritage Center of the City of Nice to reserve your places.
Four highlights of this visit:
- A guided tour of the Fort,
- An exhibition tracing the history of the fort, from its creation to the present day,
- A presentation of the 3D modeling of the fort,
- A panoramic view of Nice and Villefranche-sur-Mer.
The Fort of Mont Alban is located in one of the highest protected natural areas on the Nice coastline.
It is a military structure built between 1557 and 1560 by order of Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy, by the architect Domenico Ponsello, following the siege of 1543.
In the context of fortifying the Nice coastline, Gianmaria Olgiati, general engineer of Charles V, suggested a defensive project including the castle of Nice, the Citadel of Villefranche-sur-Mer, and the Fort of Mont Alban.
Since 2010, it has been the subject of a restoration project to preserve and maintain it.
