Nice Cavigal Handball secured a crucial victory against AS Lyon Caluire (28-25) during the 14th day of the National Championship. In front of a half-filled but noisy Pasteur gymnasium, the team from Nice managed to make a difference and keep their promotion hopes alive.
The Eagles started strong. From the very first minutes, they imposed high pressing and finished their actions effectively. After five minutes, they were already leading by three points. On the other side, the Lyonnais lacked precision in front of the goal and accumulated fouls. Several temporary exclusions weakened their team.
However, after a promising start, the team from Nice experienced a slump. Many missed opportunities allowed the visitors to catch up by the 14th minute. Despite this setback, Cavigal showed character. Thanks to a strong collective response, they regained a four-point lead before the 20th minute (11-07).
The last ten minutes of the first half were dominated by the home team. Solid in defense and efficient in attack, they could rely on their goalkeeper Maxime Aicardi, who made several decisive saves. At halftime, Nice was leading (15-11), encouraged by the crowd.
A second half dominated by Nice
The start of the second half was perfect for the team from Nice. The change of goalkeeper paid off. รtienne Speno, who came into play, made three consecutive saves and stopped an important Lyon penalty. In attack, the Eagles scored two quick goals, widening the gap to (17-11).
Lyon tried to respond by slowing down the game and maintaining possession. But Speno continued to shine. His efficacy allowed Nice to dominate the early minutes of the second half. After six minutes, the score was a striking 4-0 in favor of the home team.
With 20 minutes left, Nice led (23-12). However, a blow occurred. Florian Graglia, Cavigal’s number 11, had to leave the field due to injury. The match then became more balanced. Each team exchanged blows, but Nice maintained a comfortable lead of +8.
Maxime Aicardi, returning to the field for a penalty, was once again decisive by stopping an opposing attempt. Nevertheless, Lyon did not give up. With five minutes remaining, more aggressive and sharper, the visitors reduced the deficit to five goals.
As Lyon pressed, Florian Graglia returned to the field and scored an important goal. His return motivated his team. Following this, the team from Nice scored several goals, while benefiting from new saves by their goalkeeper.
Despite a final show of pride from the Lyonnais, Nice managed to maintain their lead and won (28-25).
An important victory for promotion
This victory allows Cavigal to stay in the race for the top places. Solid defensively and effective in attack, the team from Nice proved they have what it takes to aim higher.
Next match for the Eagles is on Saturday, March 1st at 6:30 PM in Annecy.
