Handball (Proligue) 3rd Matchday: Cavigal Falls in Dijon

Latest News

Following the draw at home against Strasbourg, the Azureans were eager to secure their first victory of the season. However, Dijon Métropole Handball had other plans and handed the Nice players their third consecutive defeat, with a score of 30 to 26.

A Mixed Record

Days go by and look alike for Cavigal Nice Handball. Much like the two previous matches, what emerges is a mixed record. Firstly, because no fewer than 30 shots found the back of the Nice net, just as against Cherbourg and Strasbourg. Secondly, because the red and blacks had eight more shooting opportunities than the Dijon team (49 versus 41) but failed to capitalize on them. Unfortunately, the lack of efficiency once again got the better of the Azureans. The opposing goalkeepers excelled with a 40% save rate, which borders on excellence.

A Significant Deficit

During the first quarter of the match, both teams were neck and neck. It was expected to remain tight, but Cavigal managed to match the pace of the Dijon attack for only a short while. It was at this moment that the Burgundians decided to accelerate the pace of the game. By halftime, the Nice team retreated to the locker room with a five-goal deficit (18-13). The second half exposed all the weaknesses in the Eagles’ defense. With 10 minutes remaining, they were trailing (27-20) and could not catch up.

Should We Worry This Early in the Season?

At the start of the 2020-2021 season, the young Eagles have yet to taste success. With one game ahead, the club sits 10th in the Proligue, but risks becoming the future bottom of the table should the trailing teams draw or win. The question is premature but may resurface if another setback occurs.

Notable Performances

The wingers shone once again. Jeremi Pirani was once again surprising with eight goals at a 67% success rate against the opposing goalkeeper and continues on his season’s standards. Meanwhile, the young 21-year-old right winger Baptiste Gaillard had remarkable success. All his one-on-one duels resulted in no less than five goals.

Back at Home

The next match will take place on October 21 at 8:30 PM against Nancy, the current leader of the Proligue championship. Cavigal will need a victory in front of their home crowd to redeem themselves and put an end to Nancy’s invincibility.
