Handicap International is organizing its traditional shoe pyramid in Nice. Meet at Place du Général Leclerc, on the Coulée Verte this Saturday, October 12, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This event is a protest against the number of civilian victims killed during current conflicts.
Nice will host the shoe pyramid of Handicap International for the 26th consecutive year. The association calls for citizen engagement to put pressure on governments. The goal is to stop the “intolerable military practices” that cause civilian casualties. “Throw shoes against bombs.”
The program of the day includes: shoe throwing, a prosthesis and wheelchair course, a virtual reality session, a demining demonstration, and workshops on the association’s areas of action…
Why is throwing your shoes on the pyramid an act of support?
The shoe symbolizes the number of lives shattered or lost due to the use of various weapons of war. Thus, coming to throw your pair of shoes is a strong signal to show your indignation. In 2023, the number of civilian victims of explosive weapons increased by 130%.
At the end of the event, the shoes collected on the shoe pyramid will be redistributed to a collection operator approved by Refashion, the event’s partner.
What happens to your shoes?
Those in good condition will be sold in charity shops. As for those in less good condition, their recyclable parts will be used to create new raw materials or new objects, and the non-recyclable parts will become an alternative fuel used as energy.
