The Constitutional Council is expected to deliver its verdict on the extension of the health pass this Thursday, August 5. If the green light is given, the measure will come into effect starting Monday, August 9. From that date, the health pass will be required for entry to restaurants, bars, and cafes, as well as for long-distance transportation.
The text was adopted by the National Assembly and the Senate on July 25, after six days of debates. The law is now set to come into effect on Monday, August 9, pending the approval of the Constitutional Council, which will rule this Thursday. This approval depends on the council’s assessment of the law’s compliance with the French constitution.
In cases where certain articles are deemed non-compliant with the constitution, only those articles will be censored by the council. However, in the unlikely event that the entire bill is rejected, the text will not come into effect and will be debated again in Parliament.
Sensitive articles include:
– the mandatory health pass for cafes and restaurants, long-distance transportation, medical facilities except emergencies, and shopping centers.
– mandatory vaccination for healthcare and medical staff
– isolation of infected individuals
– sanctions against employees refusing the health pass.
Given the significant decision to be made today, which will likely confirm the implementation of the health pass starting this Monday, there is little doubt that anti-vaccine and anti-health pass protesters will march in large numbers this weekend against this new bill. In Nice, demonstrations are planned at 11 a.m. at Place Massรฉna and then at 2 p.m. at Place Garibaldi.
