On the occasion of World Ocean Day (June 8), join us for the “Ocean21” event, a gathering that will honor and amplify the “voice of the ocean.” Until June 12, there will be activities, conferences, debates, screenings, artistic interventions… to discover marine natural and cultural heritage.

Wednesday, June 8: World Ocean Day

10 AM-12 PM: Guided tour “The Depths of the Prom” โ€“ Promenade des Anglais

Creation of a children’s reading rug

2 PM-5:30 PM: Conferences and round tables organized by Aurore Asso and Richard Chemla, hosted by Nicolas Mรฉrou โ€“ Quai de la Douane, Port of Nice

Presentation of Aurore Assoโ€™s photographic exhibition “Mare Nostrum Says No to Plastic”

  • 2:00 PM-2:15 PM: Launch of the afternoon dedicated to World Ocean Day with a speech by Richard Chemla, Deputy Mayor of Nice for Health, Ecology, and Well-being, Vice President for Ecological Transition of the Nice Cรดte d’Azur Metropolis.
  • 2:15 PM-3:00 PM: Characterization of plastic pollution

The different types of plastics that occupy our daily lives and the manufacturing processes that cause their ecotoxicity. With Patrick Navard, engineer in material physics (INSA Lyon) specializing in polymers and Marie Luiza Pedrotti, researcher at CNRS working at the Villefranche Oceanography Laboratory and coordinator of the TARA Mediterranean expedition.

  • 3:15 PM-4:00 PM: Means of combating plastic pollution

Legislation, local authorities and associations, their role in evolving the mentalities and behaviors of citizens. With Maรฎtre Hรฉloise Aubret, environmental law lawyer and waste law professor at UCA, Jamila Poydenot, project manager at CIPE for the Lรฉrins Islands and Cรดte d’Azur and coordinator of Ecogestes Mรฉditerranรฉe PACA at the Lรฉrins Islands and Cรดte d’Azur and Laurent Calatayud, Director of the cleanliness service of the City of Nice and Thomas Pomรฉro, president of the association Bleu Gorgone.

  • 4:00 PM-5:30 PM: The network of marine protected areas, a major tool for ocean conservation

What is the reserve effect? What role can local authorities play in creating and managing MPAs? Why is the Blue Coast Marine Park an example of a successful Marine Protected Area? How can the MPA network contribute to current ocean conservation challenges? With Aurore Asso, municipal councilor sub-delegate for the Coast, the Sea, and Ecology, Coralie Meinesz marine environment project manager at the Nice Cรดte d’Azur Metropolis, Frรฉdรฉric Bachet, Fishing and management networks manager at the Blue Coast Marine Park and Romain Renoux, Executive Director of The MedFund.

Sunday, June 12

9:30 AM-12:00 PM: Collective beach cleaning in Nice on and under water โ€“ Municipal Galleries, Quai des Etats-Unis

Distribution of materials to participants (bags, pickers, gloves). At 11:30 AM, collection will stop for waste weighing. This solidarity action will conclude the Ocean21 event.
