France must face a continuously rising thermometer this week. The people of Nice are particularly affected, as the Alpes-Maritimes has been placed on yellow heatwave alert. It is sometimes difficult for some to reconcile barrier gestures with high temperatures. Dr. Jean-Luc Carreras gives us his advice on how to protect ourselves.
Does the heatwave risk increasing the circulation of the virus?
Jean-Luc Carreras: No, the heatwave itself does not promote the multiplication of the virus. By that, I mean that the heat does not play a role. However, during these periods, the population tends to move a lot. People then find themselves gathered in so-called “tourist” locations, which could subsequently create clusters.
How can one reconcile masks and high temperatures?
It is true that it can be complicated to keep the mask on, but it is necessary. Enclosed spaces are often air-conditioned: shops, museums, cinemas… Therefore, it is essential to wear a mask throughout our visits to these places. As for the outdoors, like markets or pedestrian streets, we must remain vigilant! Always bring a large bottle of water, staying hydrated remains the best solution. A misting spray is also a good alternative to cool down while keeping the mask on.
Are elderly people more at risk during this period?
Elderly people are more vulnerable, just like young children. They should avoid going out during the hottest hours, best to go out before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m. Outings this week should be limited to necessary trips (like shopping).
What are your main tips to protect ourselves?
I repeat, but it is important to avoid enclosed spaces and those with high population density. You can have fun, but the heat should not make us forget social distancing, masks, and sanitizer!
