Water for all in Nice!
The City of Nice has shut off the water from the fountain at Place du Pin to drive away the homeless, citing a request from local shopkeepers due to the disturbances that their presence might cause. In reality, the vast majority of shopkeepers and restaurateurs oppose this closure and are simply asking for increased cleanliness and security measures.
We push the poor away, we do not fight poverty.
Water is life. Cutting access to drinking water is unacceptable. This is not about taking a political stance but about respecting the minimum conditions for existence.
We are, moreover, on a heatwave alert, and it is highly recommended for everyone to stay as hydrated as possible. Cutting access to drinking water during a heatwave alert, under any pretext, is an irresponsible act against public health and the general interest.
We, residents, associations, parties, and unions, demand:
- Urgently restoring drinking water access for everyone throughout the city
- Putting an end to discriminatory measures taken against the homeless (anti-begging decree, anti-homeless urban furniture, deliberately insufficient emergency accommodation spaces, gradual removal of free public toilets and showers, etc.) and, conversely, engaging in real consultation and taking concrete measures to ensure decent living conditions for people in extreme poverty in Nice: homeless people (especially women), Roma, working poor, elderly precarious individuals, etc.
We also request the Mayor of Nice to kindly meet with us to shed full light on these discriminatory measures and to work constructively towards improving the living conditions of people in extreme poverty in Nice.
Finally, we request the Prefect of Alpes-Maritimes to enforce public health measures in case of a heatwave throughout the department: in Nice as elsewhere and without any delay.
