A 1.2 km tunnel to streamline traffic between the city center and the A8, reduce noise pollution, and improve the daily lives of the people of Nice
The city of Nice has grandly inaugurated the new western exit of the Voie Mathis. This 1.2 km tunnel now connects the Route de Grenoble to the A8 motorway. A strategic connection, long awaited, aiming to ease congestion on saturated routes like Avenue Grinda and to alleviate the entire western side of the city. The infrastructure, dug deep underground, is expected to reduce surface traffic by 20,000 vehicles per day. According to projections, noise pollution will decrease by nine decibels, and drivers will save between 6 and 30 minutes of travel time, depending on the time of day.
A festive inauguration
The inauguration took place in a festive atmosphere. Before its opening to traffic the following day, over 10,000 residents of Nice were invited to explore the tunnel on foot. DJ sets, children’s entertainment, food trucks, and a Niçois buffet enlivened this popular event. A way to mark the city’s history. Christian Estrosi, the mayor of Nice, hailed an emblematic project: “this moment is historic. We share it together. This structure belongs to you. Make it your own!”
Philippe Tabarot, the Minister Delegate for Transport, and Laurent Hottiaux, the Prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes, were also present to acknowledge this major advancement in urban mobility. This new western exit signifies a turning point for traffic in Nice. It is part of a broader vision of improving mobility and ecological transition undertaken by the Métropole Nice Côte d’Azur.
