For the final day of the season, the Eagles of Nice hosted Amiens. The latter aimed to claim the sixth place, while the home team wanted to finish on a high note. After an intense confrontation, Amiens won 5 to 4 in a penalty shootout.
For the Gothiques of Amiens, it was their second match within a 24-hour span. This series of games did not hinder them, quite the opposite. The first period was dominated thoroughly by the offensively in-form team from the French Riviera. Peter Hreorcak opened the scoring in the 14th minute and was followed by Martin Matejicek shortly before halftime. The second period saw both teams neutralize each other with a goal on either side.
As soon as the last twenty minutes began, the Gothiques caught up with the Eagles by capitalizing on their defensive errors. In the final minutes, Michal Popelka (Nice) thought he had secured the victory for his team. But the tenacity of the Amiens players ensured a penalty shootout. They easily dominated it with a 3 to 0 score.
The nightmare of the second part of the season finally ends for the team from the French Riviera. Despite numerous home games, the red and blacks were never able to elevate their level of play to remain in contention for the final podium of the Ligue Magnus. Stanislav Sutor’s men conclude the 2020-2021 season in ninth place (out of 12) with ten wins and sixteen losses. We hope they will manage to regain a positive dynamic to approach the next season calmly.
