Hockey (Ligue Magnus): The Mid-Season Review of the Nice Eagles

Latest News

Currently the runners-up of the Ligue Magnus, the Nice Eagles have experienced a first part of the season filled with twists and turns. Amid numerous postponed matches and closed-door confrontations, the team from the Cรดte d’Azur looks forward to the rest of the championship in the best possible manner.

A Complicated Start to the Season

At the start of the 2020-2021 season, Stanislav Sutor’s men began with difficulty, suffering two consecutive defeats, including a 5-0 loss on Anglet’s ice. The team from Nice would get their revenge a few weeks later on December 13 by doing things in style (4-1). As for other face-offs, the reds and blacks alternated between good and not-so-good performances, losing precious points in the race for the title. For their final match of the year 2020, the Eagles secured an important victory against the Gap Raptors. An equalizer just 17 seconds before the final whistle by Kristjan Cepon allowed them to win in a shootout. In this, Nice’s goalkeeper Rok Stojanovic came out on top over the Gap players by stopping four consecutive shots.

A Standings That Is Not Yet Significant

The various postponed matches have affected the 12 teams in the Ligue Magnus differently. The culprit being the Covid-19 pandemic, which did not affect the regions of France in the same way. The Eagles are the team that have played the most matches, with a total of 12. Conversely, Brianรงon and Cergy-Pontoise have played half as many games and are logically at the bottom of the championship standings.

Does Nice Have an Advantage Over Its Competitors?

Additionally, the team from the Cรดte d’Azur is just one point away from the first place held by Rouen, but with five more games played than the latter. However, the point where the team from Nice can look forward to the rest of the competition is the fact that they have a more regular rhythm than all the other teams in the Ligue Magnus. In the final stretch, the reds and blacks will not end up exhausted with a surplus of postponed days to make up for. For their return to the ice, the Eagles will face Chamonix on January 3.
