Inauguration of Méarelli Stadium: Clash Between Nice City Hall and the Regional Council

Latest News

As if it weren’t hot enough already, the temperature rose another notch yesterday during the inauguration of the new Méarelli Stadium, formerly the temple of Nice rugby and now dedicated to all sports. At the origin of the dispute is the subsidy granted by the Regional Council, which would be €100,000 according to Christine Mirauchaux and €50,000 according to Christian Estrosi. Not very sporting!

mearelli.jpg To make Nice a city of sports excellence, the municipality has launched an ambitious plan to promote and develop sports practice, with the realization of major projects, but also with the renovation of local facilities.

Since December 2010, the City of Nice has completed and funded renovation works for the Alfred Méarelli Stadium, subsidized by the State, the General Council of Alpes-Maritimes, and the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region*, to provide athletes with ideal conditions for using this facility and to give new life to the Saint-Augustin district.

These works (with a total cost of €1,350,000 VAT included) completed within the set deadlines have enabled:

  • The creation of a new generation synthetic field;
  • The complete refurbishment of the stand (610 seats);

  • The renovation of the basketball and handball courts;

  • The creation of 14 pétanque courts on the upper part and 3 on the lower part;

  • The creation of a clubhouse for the pétanque area and a multipurpose room, as well as two pétanque courts on the lower part;

  • The creation of a rock wall on the upper part of the site;

  • Landscaping.
