This Friday, May 17, the City of Nice inaugurated “La Maïoun de Cathy,” a new day center for the LGBTQIA+ community located at 14 Boulevard Risso.

On this International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, Friday, May 17, the City of Nice inaugurated “La Maïoun de Cathy“, a new day center for the LGBTQIA+ community, located at 14 Boulevard Risso. This initiative, supported by Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice, President of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis, and Deputy President of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region, marks an important step in supporting LGBTQIA+ individuals.

During the inauguration, Christian Estrosi reaffirmed the City of Nice’s commitment to fighting homophobia. He emphasized that, “although homophobia is a reality, it is less prevalent in Nice thanks to the crucial role played by centers like this, which is reflected in lower statistics than in other regions.” He stated, “Nice is one of the most beautiful cities in France, cheerful and friendly. This scourge must be fought so that everyone receives the same respect and consideration, without difference.”

La “Maïoun de Cathy” is managed by the LGBTQIA+ Côte d’Azur Center. It offers a peaceful setting where beneficiaries can discuss personal topics and receive appropriate support. The project’s name pays tribute to Cathy Richeux, a respected figure in Nice known for her volunteer work with LGBT communities, who passed away a year ago.

A refuge and a space for dialogue

This new day center aims to welcome young people, offering workspaces and workshops dedicated to them. Indeed, it is a place where young people can come together, dialogue, and overcome the challenges they face. Among the services offered, specific support is provided for individuals who have suffered assaults, highlighting the commitment to fight against homophobia.

The poignant story of Arturo, who was assaulted on December 21, 2022, resonates particularly strongly. His testimony highlights the importance of filing a complaint when one is a victim of a homophobic attack and knowing that the perpetrators will be prosecuted. The message is clear: there is support available for victims, and it is crucial to come forward.

A fight against isolation

“La Maïoun de Cathy” also serves as a place for fighting against isolation. By providing a space where individuals can meet and forge connections, it enables everyone to find happiness again. Thus, this center responds to the needs of the community, providing both day and night accommodation with housing possibilities.
