The International Day Against LGBT-Phobias is held every year in reference to May 17, 1990, the date on which the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses. More than 70 countries around the world penalize lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender people with forced labor, imprisonment, torture, or the death penalty.
On the occasion of the International Day Against LGBT-Phobias, the LGBT Center Cรดte dโAzur and all the associations that comprise it, fighting year-round for the dignity, rights, and health of the most exposed among us, will strongly remind that the preservation and application of fundamental human rights and the protection of the most vulnerable, all children, and all families must be imperatives of fraternity, here in the Alpes Maritimes, in France, and in Europe.
A gathering will take place at 10, Place Garibaldi.
While assaults against lesbian, gay, bi, and transgender people have exploded in 2018 in France (+66% compared to 2017, according to the 2019 report from SOS Homophobia), with more than one in two LGBT people reporting having been a victim of assault in their lifetime, and too few victims daring to file a complaint (one in five),
The list of grievances is long, as is the road to achieving effective parity:
A steadfast commitment from the state in the face of increasing violence against LGBT people, and the concrete implementation of the plan announced by the government
Pursuing equality of rights by opening medically assisted procreation to all women, with full coverage
The cessation of the policy of sending LGBT people back to homophobic and transphobic countries! The welcoming of people fleeing their country due to life threats must be ensured. Human rights are the honor of France.
A reform of kinship laws allowing full protection for all families and children
Free, simple, and instantaneous civil status change for trans people
A strong commitment from France to the “Global Fund to Fight Tuberculosis, Malaria, and AIDS,” diseases particularly affecting LGBTs worldwide, to generate the necessary resources to end AIDS
A robust advocacy by France for the universal decriminalization of homosexuality and ensuring higher standard harmonization of human rights within the European Union, and particularly the rights of LGBTI people.
