International Day for the Eradication of Poverty: It’s time to invest in tackling the causes of poverty!

Latest News

The President of the Republic announced on October 17, the 30th World Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty, a consultation on the fight against poverty with the aim of defining a strategy and the urgency to act, emphasizing that initiatives conducted with the poorest are essential to move towards a fairer society where everyone has a place.

Extreme poverty has become a lasting issue in our country.

Between 2000 and 2014, the number of people living below the threshold of extreme poverty (40% of the median income) increased by 43.6%.

The sharp rise in inequalities reinforces a sense of abandonment among an increasing part of society, endangering the motto of our Republic.

It is necessary to take the time for consultation and genuinely involve people experiencing severe precarity. This consultation, initiated by the President of the Republic, should begin with an assessment of the 1998 law against exclusions and the 2012 anti-poverty plan, not forgetting the actions carried out locally against social exclusion in all its forms.

It is time to invest sustainably in the fight against poverty, tackling its root causes, not just its consequences! Without adequate financial resources, this consultation will result in wishful thinking or low-impact actions from which the poorest will not benefit.

Ensuring educational success for everyone, access to healthcare, culture, citizenship, housing, and employment, and guaranteeing social minimums that allow a dignified life, is to avoid the intolerable human and financial cost of poverty. It is about acting for all and sustaining democracy.
