March 8th has been celebrated for more than a century around the world, a day symbolizing the struggles and demands for women’s rights, against sexism and inequalities compared to men.
The Collective for Women’s Rights 06 and other associations have called for a feminist strike and demonstration “to denounce and stop a patriarchal and racist society that exploits, subjugates, and kills.”
According to the organizers, “the COVID-19 pandemic has shown that women are indispensable to the functioning of society, yet they are constantly made invisible, underpaid, mistreated, poorly regarded. We are in the streets to demand equality, salary and social. We are in the streets to denounce and put an end to sexist and sexual discrimination and violence.”
Theirs is a real declaration of war: “We are on strike and in the streets this March 8, 2021, like women around the world, to protest and demand, because without women, the world stops!”
In 2021, the issue of women’s rights remains relevant. Equal pay, violence, mental load: these are some of the themes that will be addressed on this International Women’s Day.
According to the European statistics agency Eurostat, “women are paid, on average, 14.1% less than men” in the EU (2018 data).
In 2020, 90 women were killed by their partners and ex-partners, compared to 146 femicides recorded by the government in 2019.
