International Women’s Rights Day: In France, when will equality happen?

For this March 8th, which celebrates “the other half of the sky,” the Women’s Rights Collective 06 invites you to gather at 3 PM at Place Masséna (corner of Gioffredo Street) in Nice for a symbolic march from Place Masséna to Place Garibaldi, passing through Old Nice. On this occasion, 15 street and/or square names will be renamed with the names of 15 women from around the world.


Worldwide:

• Women perform 66% of the world’s work but earn only 10% of the income

• 70% of the 1.2 billion people living on less than $1 per day are women

• Women produce 50% of the world’s food but own only 1% of the property

• 2/3 of illiterate individuals are women

• Gender-related persecutions are still not recognized by the Geneva Convention in asylum law criteria

• Approximately 40 million people are prostituted worldwide, mostly women and children

• 720 million women have undergone forced marriage (often before the age of 18)

• 140 million women have suffered genital mutilation

• Femicide, female infanticide, and prenatal sex selection (particularly in India and China) result in 150 million missing women worldwide.

Women’s demands:

The situation in France is far from ideal:

• 28% wage gap between men and women across all jobs

• 82% of part-time jobs are held by women

• Retired women receive an average of €950 compared to €1,650 for men

• 80% of domestic chores are performed by women

• Women account for 27% of deputies and 25% of senators

• Of the 40,000 people prostituted in France, 90% are women

• Each year, 200,000 women report being victims of domestic violence

• 75,000 people are victims of rape each year, the majority being women and children

• In 2013, 121 women were beaten to death by their partner or ex-partner
