The rumor had been more than present in the media lately; it is now official. The Tokyo Summer Olympics in Japan will not welcome supporters from abroad due to the coronavirus pandemic, which continues to ravage the world today. This is a first in the history of the Olympic Games.
This decision was made official this Saturday morning by the organizers of the prestigious sporting event. Originally scheduled from July 24 to August 9, 2020, the event will take place this summer, specifically from July 23 to August 8, 2021.
To justify this decision, Thomas Bach, the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), stated just before an online meeting held this Saturday: “Our top priority has been and remains the safety of all participants in the Olympic Games and the Japanese people. We must make decisions that may require sacrifices from everyone.”
This decision certainly did not come as a surprise, as local media reported on it at the beginning of March. At that time, the press was already convinced that the Japanese government had already made a decision in this regard, especially since the local population is particularly concerned about Covid-19 and its various variants.
