From November 24 to 27, 2011, the “C’est pas classique” music festival took place, an event that has become a must-attend for the most discerning connoisseurs as well as the merely curious. It is an artistic celebration where free admission goes hand in hand with quality. It allows an entire population to experience this human vibration and journey between melody and time characteristic of operas. A smart initiative that has managed to improve year after year, yet its great success still calls for reflection…
Honored by the presence of Barbara Hendricks, François-René Duchâble, Michael Nyman, and many other equally talented artists, this seventh festival was able to reach a cosmopolitan audience of all ages and backgrounds, to vigorously and elegantly celebrate “the universality of beauty.”
Keen to reach all the curious souls in this usually inaccessible world, it spread not only in the Palais Acropolis but also in churches, wandering through the streets.
However, this interesting and enriching festival also brings us back to a rather disconcerting reality. Culture is expensive, and that is no news to anyone. Nevertheless, the venues filled at an astonishing rate. They were filled with numerous people who (for the most part) had never attended an Opera before.
Thus, Acropolis was not filled due to an effective communication campaign, but simply because all age groups are eager to learn, at a time when culture is still not accessible to everyone.
So… C’est pas classique is really great! But what about the rest of the year?
