The CUM of Nice opens its doors this Tuesday, March 30, 2010, from 6 PM for the 6th meeting of controversial discussions.
On the agenda: the “role of the media,” which is both the title of the conference and a critical or positive argument on today’s current events. Many (politicians and citizens) are questioning the importance of the “Fourth Estate.”
Originally, simple tools for transmitting information, have the media, regardless of their platforms (including digital), themselves become the real power?
The famous film by Orson Welles, Citizen Kane, depicted the story of a press magnate (Hearst), who boasted of setting up, through his media power, the various presidents of the United States. Nowadays, Rupert Murdoch, at the head of the leading international media group, is a real example of the impact between information and power.
The visit to Nice and the Mediterranean University Center of Jean-Paul Kauffman, former hostage in Lebanon and awarded the French Language Prize for his entire body of work, will allow for a deeper exploration of the subject. Indeed, how can we forget that Jean-Paul Kauffman and Michel Seurat were hostages during the Lebanon war from 1985 to 1988? He was the sole survivor of this hostage situation thanks to the intervention of Raymond Marchianni during the cohabitation between François Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac.
Jean-Paul Kauffman is also known for being an enthusiast of Bordeaux wines and cigars, having written several books on the subject.
